72-96 pixels per inch is plenty for desktop composition, anything larger just makes the image file size larger. Start with twice the dimension and add a vector mask and path before reducing to the finished size. Start with transparent background, 8bit, make sure Windows is set as your color picker in Preferences, always save in .png to preserve transparency. Using custom shapes adds path and vector when starting with a rounded rectangle etc., the layer must be rasterized to edit its contents, style, pattern, etc. Just a few thoughts...
